To meet the ÖBB's request for rapid delivery of new locomotives for freight transport on the Tauern Railway To meet this requirement, four locomotives were diverted from a series of the Swedish Type Rc 2 that were under construction. The locomotives equipped with thyristor technology performed well and a total of ten machines were delivered by 1974. Hardly any other series of the ÖBB has had such a wide range of lettering variants over the course of its service life.

The 1043 002, one of the locomotives in the “ÖBB Jaffa design”, was in use in the 1990s with an umbra gray roof, frame and running gear. The upper decorative strip was placed over the front windows. The locomotive plates had been removed and the locomotive numbers were attached to the frame as adhesive numbers.
